OpenAI and AMD partner to acquire up to 10% of AMD shares and deploy 6 gigawatt-class AMD systems

Through this agreement, OpenAI has positioned AMD as its 'core strategic computing partner' and will drive large-scale adoption of AMD technologies, including the AMD Instinct MI450 series and rack-scale AI solutions, into next-generation products.

'This partnership is a true win-win for both companies, enabling the adoption of AI at massive scale and accelerating the development of the entire ecosystem,' the companies said in a joint statement.



As part of the agreement, AMD has allocated up to 160 million shares to OpenAI, with the first set of rights vesting upon the deployment of 1 gigawatt of AMD systems, and the remaining rights vesting upon the deployment of additional systems, totaling 6 gigawatts.

'We're thrilled to partner with AMD to bring our services to users through AMD chips,' said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. 'This move comes in addition to our work with NVIDIA (which we plan to increase in our purchase of NVIDIA chips). The world needs more computing power.'



Following this news, AMD's stock price soared 23.71%, while NVIDIA's stock price, which previously announced a partnership with OpenAI, fell 1%.
