OpenAI and NVIDIA announce strategic partnership, NVIDIA invests approximately 15 trillion yen in OpenAI, and OpenAI deploys 10 gigawatt-class NVIDIA systems

On September 22, 2025, OpenAI and NVIDIA announced a strategic partnership to build AI infrastructure. To support this massive infrastructure development, NVIDIA intends to invest up to $100 billion (approximately 14.8 trillion yen) in OpenAI depending on the deployment of the system, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has described it as 'the largest AI infrastructure project in history.'

The partnership between OpenAI and NVIDIA aims to accelerate the development and deployment of OpenAI's next-generation AI models, with OpenAI building at least 10 gigawatts (GW) of NVIDIA systems, equivalent to millions of NVIDIA GPUs. The first 1 GW of systems will use NVIDIA's next-generation platform, Vera Rubin , and are scheduled to begin operation in the second half of 2026.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said the partnership is about taking AI from the lab to the world, and added that 'this is just the first 10 gigawatts,' hinting at further expansion.

On September 23, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman published a blog post titled 'Abundant Intelligence,' in which he stated, 'The use of AI is growing so exponentially that in the future, access to AI may be considered a basic human right.'

Furthermore, CEO Altman pointed out that a lack of computing power is a serious challenge hindering the progress of AI. He explained that limited computing power could force us to choose between, for example, 'researching a cure for cancer or providing personalized education for everyone.' To solve this problem, Altman has an ambitious vision of building 'factories capable of producing 1GW of new AI infrastructure every week.'

Regarding this partnership, CEO Altman stated, 'There is no other partner that can achieve this at the scale and speed that NVIDIA does,' expressing his immense confidence in NVIDIA. He also emphasized that 'building this infrastructure is key to everything we want to do,' and that securing computing power is essential for the development of AI.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman said that since CEO Huang gave OpenAI an NVIDIA DGX system in 2016, computing power has increased by a billion times, and expressed his expectations for the dramatic scale-up that this partnership will bring.

OpenAI's collaboration with NVIDIA complements existing efforts with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and others.
