With the acquisition of xAI, SpaceX announced its vision for 'space-based AI.'
In a statement, Musk said, 'Current advances in AI rely on large terrestrial data centers that require enormous amounts of power and cooling. The power demands required for AI cannot be met by terrestrial solutions without burdening local communities and the environment. In the long term, space-based AI is clearly the only way to scale. With nearly zero operation and maintenance costs and direct access to near-constant sunlight, satellites fundamentally change how computing power can be scaled. It's always sunny in space! Launching a constellation of one million satellites to act as orbital data centers would be the first step towards a Kardashev II civilization that can harness the full energy of the sun, while simultaneously supporting billions of modern AI-powered applications and ensuring a multi-planetary future for humanity.'
SpaceX has just filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission on January 30, 2026, to move forward with its plan to launch one million solar-powered satellite data centers.

Musk also revealed that the company will further accelerate its current satellite launch program. 'The sheer number of satellites required for a space data center will push Starship to even greater heights,' Musk said. 'If we continue to launch 200 tons per hour, Starship will be able to transport millions of tons per year into orbit and beyond, paving the way for a future where humanity can explore the stars. Basic math shows that launching one million tons of satellites per year, with each ton delivering 100kW of computing power, would add 100 gigawatts of AI computing power per year, with no ongoing operational or maintenance costs. Ultimately, there is a path to launching one terawatt per year from Earth.'
According to Bloomberg , the combined company's value will be $1.25 trillion (approximately 194.3 trillion yen).
It has also been reported in the past that Musk is considering an IPO for SpaceX, with reports suggesting it could be as soon as June.
There are also reports that Tesla and xAI are considering a merger.
