On January 3, 2026, just after 6:00 PM, President Trump posted on Truth Social, 'The United States has successfully launched a major attack against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro.'

Venezuela was ruled by President Chavez, who had been in dictatorship since 1999, but died of illness in 2013. Maduro, who was vice president at the time, was elected and officially became president. As of 2026, he will be serving his third term, but there have been allegations of fraud in the election, both from the opposition and both within and outside the country.

Relations between the United States and Venezuela have been somewhat conflictual, with the exception of the Obama-Chavez regime, and President Maduro in particular has been inclined toward anti-Americanism.

President Trump has taken a tough stance against Venezuela, deploying a fleet off the coast of Venezuela since the end of 2025.
