Google finally starts mandatory age verification

It has been discovered that Google has begun age verification in some regions, with the aim of protecting minors.
Apple, Google required to provide digital ID tools under Missouri age verification law – but are they ready? | TechRadar
On December 3, 2025, a Reddit user claiming to be in the United States reported that they had been subjected to age verification by Google. According to the screenshots shared, the system appears to verify age using a government-issued ID such as a driver's license, a credit card, or a selfie.
This appears to be in response to the enactment of laws across the United States requiring age verification for internet services. In particular, Missouri recently enacted a law on November 30, 2025, requiring users to prove they are 18 years of age or older to access content deemed harmful to minors.
Additionally, Missouri law includes a provision that states, 'Mobile operating system providers with at least 10 million users nationwide must provide a digital identification system that websites and applications can use to verify a user's age.' Google appears to be responding to this provision.

However, according to technology media TechRadar, the age verification systems provided by Google and Apple are not enough for major websites to be convinced to use them, and Aylo, which operates popular adult sites such as Pornhub, has resorted to blocking all users in Missouri.
In November 2025, Apple announced the ability to create an ID in Apple Wallet and use it to verify your identity. Similarly, Google is enabling identity verification with a digital ID in Google Wallet.
However, some people perceive these identity verification methods as a security risk, and are known to attempt to circumvent the restrictions by using VPNs.
In the UK, age verification requirements for internet services have been introduced, and VPN service registrations have increased by 1400% - GIGAZINE
