Apple announced on its official support page that Clips will no longer receive updates and that new users will no longer be able to download the app after October 10, 2025. However, existing users can redownload the app from their Apple account if necessary. At the time of writing, Clips has been removed from the App Store .

However, technology media TechCrunch points out that 'without updates, Clips may become more difficult to use over time.' In fact, Apple recommends users download videos created with Clips (with or without effects added) to their photo library and view or edit them in other apps.

TechCrunch noted that Clips, released in 2017, 'seemed like Apple's answer to Snapchat and Instagram Stories.' While Clips isn't a social network, it allows users to stitch together photos and videos with filters, emojis, and music.

MacRumors noted that 'Apple added new features to Clips shortly after its release, but updates in recent years have been limited to bug fixes.'

On Reddit, many users commented, ' I tried to use Clips a while ago, but it was confusing, ' or ' I didn't even know it existed .' Others criticized Apple's approach to app distribution, saying, 'Apple develops software that's designed solely for presentation key points or event highlights, and ends up not being updated or maintained. It looks beautiful, but it's completely useless, incompatible with other features, or just stubbornly idiosyncratic and impractical in some way, so no one uses it.' In response, another commenter said, 'Apps like Clips, Music Memos, and Invites are passion projects by single Apple employees that generate a great response and are made public, but when the person involved in their development leaves the company, Apple seems to stop updating them.'
