Is GitHub Cooked? visualizes GitHub's incident and downtime history for the past three months. Incidents are categorized into five levels: None, Minor, Major, Critical, and Ongoing, while downtime is color-coded by its duration. Each square represents one day, and this shows that outages occur almost every day.

According to Is GitHub Cooked?, GitHub has experienced 1,128 incidents since March 2016, averaging 24.3 incidents per month over the past three months. The longest period without incidents in the last six years was 8 days, and the month with the most incidents was February 2026 with 37 incidents.

On August 17, 2026, a major outage occurred . It took nearly seven hours from GitHub's initial report of the outage until its resolution, and many services experienced errors or performance degradation. GitHub reported that this was triggered by 'record-high traffic,' adding that the number of monthly commits had doubled from 1.4 billion in April 2026 to 2.9 billion in August.

As AI technology advances, GitHub usage fees have also surged, and GitHub often suffers from insufficient storage space. It was previously reported that Microsoft, which operates GitHub, was working to resolve the issue.
