ChatGPT's user share falls below 50% for the first time, with Gemini and Claude catching up.

A Sensor Tower report, 'State of AI 2026,' which analyzed the usage of generative AI services, revealed that ChatGPT's 'True Audience Share,' which represents the percentage of users excluding overlap between apps and the web, fell below 50% for the first time in March 2026. While ChatGPT remains the largest AI assistant, the landscape of the generative AI market is beginning to change as Google's 'Gemini' and Anthropic's 'Claude' gain users.

Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in November 2022, it has rapidly gained popularity as a leading entry point for using generative AI. However, as the market expands, more users are choosing AI based on factors such as integration with existing services, areas of expertise, pricing, and processing speed, creating ample room for competitors to acquire users.

According to True Audience share tracked by Sensor Tower, ChatGPT fell below 50% for the first time in March 2026, reaching 46.4% at the end of May. Gemini expanded to 27.7%, and Claude to 10.3%.

However, a decline in market share does not necessarily mean a decrease in the number of ChatGPT users. ChatGPT continues to grow, with its monthly active users projected to exceed 1.1 billion in May 2026. However, the decline in ChatGPT's share of the overall user base is a result of competing services growing at an even faster pace.

Competitors not only offer conversation interfaces similar to ChatGPT, but also enhance integration with existing services and features tailored to specific tasks. Gemini's strength lies in its broad integration with Google services, while Claude is gaining popularity for its web version and for productivity uses such as document creation and software development.

In addition to text generation, ChatGPT can now handle web search, image generation, voice interaction, data analysis, and programming assistance. The competition among companies is not just about comparing response performance, but also about how well these services can be integrated into the services we use in our daily work and lives.

While OpenAI has the most users, Claude surpasses ChatGPT in revenue per user for mobile apps in the United States. According to The Next Web, in May 2026, Claude's revenue per user was $2.76 (approximately 443 yen), while ChatGPT's was $1.74 (approximately 279 yen).

While OpenAI has a significant lead in terms of user numbers, Anthropic holds a considerable advantage in terms of profitability, and it has been revealed that its annualized revenue will surpass OpenAI's by March 2026.

Sensor Tower states that the proliferation of generative AI is not only expanding the number of users but also changing how people spend, advertise, and shop within apps. While ChatGPT will continue to be the largest AI assistant, competition will intensify as Gemini and Claude grow.
