A fatal accident has been reported at Gigabay, a spacecraft construction facility under construction adjacent to SpaceX's launch site, Starbase. Authorities have not released information about the victim, but the Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources, that the victim was a subcontractor at the construction site.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Friday, May 15, 2026, local time. The site was the construction site of Gigabay, a massive spacecraft building facility adjacent to Starbase, the launch site for Starbase in Texas.
The local newspaper, the San Antonio Express News, quoted Brownsville Fire Chief Jared Sheldon as saying that paramedics were dispatched to Starbase at 4:17 a.m., but seven minutes later they were informed that 'SpaceX's emergency medical team was already on the scene,' so they called off and returned to base.
Starbase has live cameras installed, and footage of the events before and after the accident was also being streamed.

According to X user @mcrs987, all the cranes used in the construction work at Gigabay stopped before an ambulance arrived at the site. @mcrs987 has posted a time-lapse video that compresses the hour from 4 to 5 into 30 seconds.

Sheriff Manuel Trevinho stated that his office conducted an accident investigation on Monday, May 18, and handed the scene over to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). While Sheriff Trevinho and the OSH have stated that the victim's identity has 'not been determined,' the Wall Street Journal reports that he was an employee of a subcontractor for Gigabay Construction who fell to his death.

The last reported fatal accident at SpaceX occurred in 2014 when a subcontractor fell from a truck at their rocket engine development facility in McGregor, Texas.
