'StravaLeaks': France's aircraft carrier located in real time by Le Monde through fitness app

The incident occurred on the morning of March 13, 2026. Arthur, a French naval officer, recorded his running activity that day using his smartwatch. Because Arthur had set his information to be public on the fitness app 'Strava,' the location of the USS Charles de Gaulle, sailing in the Mediterranean Sea 100 km south of Turkey, was immediately revealed.
Charles de Gaulle was scheduled to participate in NATO exercises in Lower Saxony, northern Germany, in February 2026, and then remain in the Baltic Sea until May. However, the situation changed with Israel and the United States' attacks on Iran , and on March 3, 2026, French President Macron ordered the deployment of a strike group including Charles de Gaulle. It was announced that the ship passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the Mediterranean Sea on March 6.
The French newspaper Le Monde found the Charles de Gaulle, located 6km away from the track published on Strava, in satellite imagery taken an hour after the Strava record was released. While it's unclear whether the Charles de Gaulle had moved or if Arthur was on an escort ship rather than the Charles de Gaulle itself, the newspaper states that 'we were able to pinpoint its exact location based on information from the fitness app.'
In addition to Arthur, there were other Strava users in this strike group, and another user had also posted photos of the deck, fitness equipment on board the ship, and photos of his colleagues.
Strava's map function has also revealed information about U.S. military bases in Syria.

Furthermore, in the case of the Russian submarine captain who was shot and killed while jogging after being accused of carrying out a missile attack in Ukraine that killed 23 civilians, the head of Ukraine's intelligence agency had 'liked' the captain's Strava running record, suggesting that the Strava record may have led to the assassination.

Incidentally, during World War II, Japan lost four aircraft carriers at once in the Battle of Midway, and there have also been instances of submarine sinkings. Even today, aircraft carriers are often portrayed as being easily sunk by missile attacks, but in reality, they are considered to have a fairly high survivability. However, concealing their location is one way to increase their survivability, so while revealing their location doesn't necessarily lead to immediate sinking, it's still not ideal.
