The desktop super app is reportedly being developed with the aim of optimizing resources by integrating OpenAI's products into a single application. According to a memo from Fiji Simo, CEO of OpenAI's Applications division, 'product fragmentation is slowing down development and making it difficult to meet target quality standards.'

OpenAI offers multiple products, but not all of them have resonated with users, and it is reported that competition is intensifying following the surge in popularity of 'Claude Code,' a coding app from competitor Anthropic.

CEO Simo, quoting a journalist's post reporting on the matter, commented, 'Companies go through a phase of exploration and a phase of refocusing, and both are very important. However, when a new initiative like Codex starts to yield results, it is extremely important to focus on it and not get distracted by other things. I am really glad that we were able to seize this opportunity right now.'

According to OpenAI, the new super app will focus on developing agent-based AI capabilities. This will allow AI systems to operate autonomously on users' computers and perform a variety of tasks, such as software creation and data analysis.

OpenAI is also reportedly collaborating with Jony Ive, who designed the iPhone, to create AI hardware, but there has been no new information for nearly a year.

OpenAI aims to ship 100 million AI devices for everyday use at the fastest pace ever, with the first device expected to be released by the end of 2026, and rumored to have a compact and elegant form factor similar to the iPod shuffle - GIGAZINE
