What would you like to do if casinos were legalized in Japan? We asked GIGAZINE readers.

Construction on Japan's first integrated resort, including a casino, began in Osaka in April 2025 and is expected to open around the fall of 2030. Therefore, in a survey conducted three times a year as part of GIGAZINE's
First, when asked 'Which of the public gambling activities are you interested in?', the most common answer was 'None in particular' at 39.53%. On the other hand, the most popular activity of interest was 'Lottery' at 29.93%, followed by 'Horse Racing' at 20.37%. 'Boat Racing' was at 4.61%, 'Bicycle Racing' at 3.40%, and 'Auto Racing' at 2.17%, indicating that public gambling interest is heavily concentrated on lotteries and horse racing.

Next, when asked, 'If casinos where you bet real money were legalized in Japan, which game would you like to try?', the most common answer was, unsurprisingly, 'None in particular' at 44.16%. Following that, in descending order, were 'Roulette' at 10.84%, 'Slot Machines' at 10.78%, 'Poker (Texas Hold'em, etc.)' at 10.21%, 'Blackjack' at 9.50%, 'Bingo' at 4.94%, 'Baccarat' at 3.98%, 'Cho-Han' at 2.50%, 'Video Poker' at 1.09%, and 'Mini Baccarat' at 0.56%. It seems that responses were concentrated on games that are well-known and whose rules are easy to understand.

Furthermore, when we asked those who answered 'Other' what they would like to do specifically, we received answers such as 'I don't want to do it/I'm not interested,' 'Something where you can bet on anything, like election results or TV ratings,' 'An underground fighting arena,' 'Mahjong,' '

The survey results revealed that while many GIGAZINE readers do not have a strong interest in public gambling or casinos, those who are interested tend to be drawn to widely known games such as lotteries and horse racing in the case of public gambling, and roulette, slot machines, poker, and blackjack in the case of casinos.
