Amazon Prime Video is raising prices in the US for its more expensive ad-free premium plan, with 4K streaming now exclusive to premium plans.

Amazon has announced that it will rename its ad-free Amazon Prime Video plan for the US market to ' Amazon Prime Video Ultra ' and raise the monthly fee from $2.99 (approximately 480 yen) to $4.99 (approximately 800 yen). It also revealed that 4K/UHD streaming will be restricted to Amazon Prime Video Ultra only.

The standard 'Amazon Prime Video' plan, available to Amazon Prime members for $14.99 per month (approximately 2,390 yen) or $139 per year (approximately 22,200 yen), includes ads, but will bring back 1080p Dolby Vision support, which was removed in 2024, and will increase the number of simultaneous streams from 3 to 4 and the number of downloads from 25 to 50. However, while 4K/UHD streaming was previously available with the 'Amazon Prime Video' plan, it will be limited to HD streaming only after this price increase.

Furthermore, 'Amazon Prime Video Ultra,' which can be subscribed to for an additional $4.99 per month, increases the number of devices that can stream simultaneously from 3 to 5, the maximum number of downloadable files from 25 to 100, and provides access to features such as exclusive access to 4K/UHD streaming.

The price increase for Amazon Prime Video's ad-free plan will be implemented for US members starting April 10, 2026, but it is unclear whether it will be implemented in other countries and regions, including Japan.

The Verge, a technology media outlet, pointed out that 'Amazon, like many other streaming services, is spending a lot of money on broadcasting live events and sports such as the NFL and NBA. Amazon says that 'adding premium features to ad-free streaming requires a lot of investment, and this pricing structure is the same for other major streaming services.''
