Nexperia, a Dutch semiconductor manufacturer, provides semiconductors for automotive, industrial equipment, mobile devices, etc. In 2018, Nexperia was acquired by Wingtech Technology (Wingtech), which is partly owned by the Chinese government.

However, in October 2025, the Dutch government took the extremely unusual step of seizing Nexperia. The Dutch government explained that the reason for seizing Nexperia was to 'prevent a situation in which products produced by Nexperia become unavailable in an emergency.'

In response, the Chinese government imposed export controls on Nexperia chips, disrupting production in the global automotive industry, Reuters reported.

Although the chip shortage has been alleviated after diplomatic negotiations, the conflict between Nexperia's Dutch headquarters and its Chinese subsidiary has only intensified. The Dutch headquarters supports the Dutch government's takeover of Nexperia, while the subsidiary demands that management rights be returned to Wingtech.

On Saturday, March 7, 2026, China's Ministry of Commerce issued a warning that the conflict between Nexperia and its subsidiary could once again trigger a global semiconductor supply chain crisis. The warning came one day after Nexperia's China packaging division accused the company of disabling the office accounts of all employees in China.

China's Ministry of Commerce criticized Nexperia for 'provoking new conflicts and bringing new difficulties and obstacles to negotiations between the companies.' It also said, 'Nexperia (headquarters) has caused serious disruptions to the company's normal production and operations, and if this leads to another crisis in global semiconductor production and supply chains, the Netherlands must bear full responsibility for it,' pointing out that the cause of the semiconductor supply chain crisis lies with the Netherlands.

Nexperia has not denied disabling the Office accounts of its subsidiary employees, but disputes the subsidiary's claim that this has affected production at its assembly and testing facility in China's Guangdong province.

The subsidiary declared its independence from the parent company after the Dutch government seized Nexperia. Since then, the parent company and the subsidiary have been accusing each other of dishonest negotiating, and the parent company has stopped supplying wafers to its factory in Guangdong, China.
