The key feature of the newly announced second-generation AirTags is that they are equipped with Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which is also found in the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. The detection distance of Apple's precision detection feature, ' Find Exact Location ,' is up to 50% longer than the previous generation, and the upgraded Bluetooth chip will enable detection over a wider range.

Additionally, Apple claims that the second-generation AirTags are 50% louder than the previous generation thanks to an improved speaker system thanks to a redesigned internal design, allowing the AirTags' sound to travel up to twice as far as the previous generation.

You can also use Find Exact Location on your Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, to find your AirTags.

AirTags can now be located using Find My, but now they can be integrated with the iOS feature 'Share My Location,' which helps users recover lost items. This allows users to share the location of lost luggage with partner airline customer service teams. Access is granted only to authorized personnel through secure Apple Account or partner authentication. Location sharing will be disabled as soon as the user retrieves their belongings, can be stopped by the owner at any time, and will automatically expire after seven days.

According to

SITA , a leading IT provider to airlines, using 'Share Your Baggage Location' reduces baggage delays by 26 percent and the number of 'totally lost' or unrecoverable bags by 90 percent. Apple says it is working directly with more than 50 airlines to make the 'Share Your Baggage Location' link private and secure.

In terms of security, the second-generation AirTags were designed from the ground up to keep location data private and secure: AirTags do not physically store location data or history on the device, and end-to-end encryption protects all communications with the Find My network, ensuring only the device owner has access to the location data.

'Designed specifically to track belongings, not people or pets, the new AirTags include industry-first protections against unwanted tracking, including cross-platform alerts and a frequently changing Bluetooth unique identifier,' Apple said.

The second-generation AirTags will be available for order from January 27, 2026, and will be available at Apple Stores by February 2026. The price is 4,980 yen (tax included) for a single unit and 16,980 yen (tax included) for a pack of four.
