Humans may have up to 33 senses instead of five

The five basic senses of humans are said to be touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. These senses are based on Aristotle's classification of the five senses, but in reality, they are more specifically divided, and it is said that humans may have approximately 22 to 33 senses.

Barry Smith of University College London states, 'Recent research suggests that humans may have dozens of senses in addition to just five.' For example, the ability to sense a slight increase in heart rate or hunger. While we take these things for granted, they cannot be simply described as 'touch.' We also have the ability to recognize the position of our limbs without sight, a sense of balance, and a sense of 'ownership' of our limbs.

It is said that normal humans unconsciously feel the sense of ownership of their limbs. However, stroke patients can lose this sense, and sometimes even have the illusion that 'someone else is moving their arm.' Even though they still have sensation in their arm, they may feel that it is 'not theirs.'

Some of the traditional senses are combinations of several other senses. For example, when we touch something, we experience pain, temperature, itchiness, and touch, and when we taste something, we experience touch, smell, and taste simultaneously. In the case of taste, the receptors on the tongue change the taste and allow us to detect salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and umami flavors.

Each of these subdivided stimuli acts to create a sensation, but no single stimulus creates a sensation. When we eat, the odor components released by chewing and slurping travel from the mouth to the nose through the nasopharynx at the back of the throat, connecting taste and aroma. Touch helps us distinguish between soft-boiled and hard-boiled eggs, and sometimes the aroma alone can help us imagine the texture.

One study has shown that changing the sound of your footsteps can make your body feel lighter or heavier while walking, and that listening to the noise of an airplane can change your sense of taste.

'Sensation is like a harmony of multiple senses, and neurologists believe that humans have between 22 and 33 senses,' Smith said.

Biochemist Bruce Durie has proposed a list of 33 senses:
·light
·red
·green
