Google announces new features for Gmail, including 'Gemini aggregates and responds to emails' and 'Gemini highly corrects email text,' starting with paid users

Google has announced that it has introduced Gemini, an AI chatbot, to Gmail, and is trialing new features, including ' AI Overviews, ' which aggregates email content, and ' Proofread, ' which uses Gemini to intelligently correct email content. These features will be available to paid users starting January 9, 2026, and features previously available only to paid members will be gradually rolled out to free users.

AI-powered summaries are conversation summaries that succinctly summarize the key points of long email threads and automatically generate answers to user search queries.

While the 'AI Summary' feature has been available to paid subscribers since 2025, it was limited to AI summarizing long email threads. The newly announced 'AI Summary' integrates with Gemini, allowing it to scrutinize emails and generate direct answers to natural language questions. For example, if you ask, 'Which plumber provided an estimate for my bathroom renovation last year?' the AI can instantly extract and summarize details, such as the name of the specific contractor who provided the estimate, from multiple related emails.

The 'AI Overview' is available to US users of Google AI Pro and Ultra, which are paid subscription plans at the time of writing.
In addition, the 'proofreading' feature, which supports writing, utilizes Gemini 3 to perform more advanced proofreading than spell checking, and is also available to US users of Google AI Pro and Ultra at the time of writing.
Proofreading will highlight areas of your email that need improvement with a dotted underline, suggesting contextual changes to tone, style, and clarity, so you can polish your writing while still maintaining your own style, for example, when planning a family get-together.

Additionally, the AI Inbox is available on a trial basis for trusted testers.
The AI Inbox uses Gemini to organize your inbox, placing priority emails at the top in the 'Priorities' section and a summary of less important messages in the 'Catch me up' section below. Gemini identifies important items, such as payment deadlines and reservation reminders, based on the people you frequently contact and the content of your messages, and displays them at the top.

These Gemini features are built into Gmail's existing 'Smart Features' settings and cannot be turned off individually. If you want to disable Gemini features, you will need to disable all of the smart features, including tracking delivery based on Gmail content, integrating with Google Calendar, and displaying rewards cards in Google Wallet.
The previous 'AI summary,' 'Help me write' feature, which helps you create and revise drafts from scratch, and 'Suggested replies,' which provide one-click reply suggestions that reflect the context of the conversation and the user's own writing style, were previously available only to paid users, but will now be available to free users as well.
