Roblox has drawn criticism due to concerns about child safety, with The Guardian pointing out in January 2022 that ' Roblox is built on child exploitation .' Other issues that have come to light include the revelation that illegal online casinos are using Roblox to lure children into online gambling , and the existence of a shadowy community that recreates mass shootings .
In November 2025, Roblox was sued by the Texas Attorney General for 'blatantly disregarding the law' and exposing children to 'sexually explicit content, exploitation, and grooming.'

On January 7, 2026, Roblox announced that it would roll out age verification requirements for chatting, which had been implemented in some regions, globally. This means that over the next week, all users will be required to complete age verification before chatting with other users.
Roblox is the first large-scale gaming platform to require age verification to use chat features. The age verification only limits communication between adults and children under the age of 16, but does not require age verification for communication between children under the age of 16.

If a user who has not completed age verification attempts to use the chat function, the following notification will be displayed:
You will need to activate your device's camera to complete age verification.
The camera will start, so move your head up, down, left and right.
The app will then automatically guess the user's age, and if it determines that the user is between 13 and 15 years old, it will restrict chat functionality to users of the same age group.
Roblox limits who users can chat with by age group, and the people users of each age group can chat with are as follows:
Roblox claims that privacy is fully respected, as images and videos used for age estimation are securely processed and immediately deleted. The age estimation system was developed by Persona and has been third-party tested and certified. Based on testing by the UK Age Verification Scheme, the age estimation model has a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users under the age of 18.

Roblox will implement this age verification requirement in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands from early December 2025, and more than 50% of daily active users in these countries have already completed age verification.
