The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is an organization whose mission is to promote users' rights to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer programs. It promotes the development and use of free software, particularly the GNU operating system and its GNU/Linux derivatives, and documentation for free software.
The two new donations received by the Free Software Foundation were both made in the cryptocurrency Monero.
This is one of the largest private donations the organization has ever received, and the donor wishes to remain anonymous.
'This incredible generosity is a true gift at a challenging time for many organizations, including ours,' said Zoe Koeman, Executive Director of the Free Software Foundation. 'It demonstrates that software freedom is increasingly recognized as a major issue of our time, central to other social movements that people care about, like privacy, property rights, and the right to repair.'
The Free Software Foundation recently began to expand into the mobile phone space with the launch of Librephone, a project aimed at bringing mobile phone freedom to users.

The organization is currently conducting its annual winter fundraising campaign and has achieved three-quarters of its goal of $400,000 (approximately 62 million yen). With this latest donation, the organization plans to shift its focus to recruiting new members.
'We are proud to be supported by a diverse range of supporters who care about digital rights. Every donation, small or large, counts. Naturally, this major donation will provide a great boost to our work, but we rely on many more donations each year to maintain our independence. The fact that this donor did not wish to be made public makes this support even more special,' added Koeman.
