The creator of Pebble announces the smart ring 'Index 01' that can be purchased for around 10,000 yen

Eric Migicovsky, creator of the Pebble smartwatch, has announced a new wearable device: the Index 01 smart ring. Unlike typical smart rings that are equipped with health management functions such as heart rate and step count, the Index 01 is unique in that it specializes in a voice memo function for recording daily ideas and tasks.

The Index 01 is based on the concept of 'external memory for the brain' and is a device specialized for voice memo functions.

Users can record audio by wearing the ring on their index finger and pressing the physical button on the side with their thumb. The recorded audio is sent to a smartphone via Bluetooth and converted into text using an open-source large-scale language model (LLM) running within a dedicated app. All processing is done locally, eliminating the need for an internet connection or data transmission to the cloud, ensuring strong privacy protection.

The Index 01 body is made of durable surgical stainless steel (316L) and features buttons made of liquid silicone rubber (LSR), and is available in three colors: polished silver, polished gold, and matte black. It is designed as a purely input device, without any notification features such as a screen, speaker, or vibration motor.

Its biggest feature is that it doesn't require charging. It has a built-in silver oxide battery that lasts for about two years if used 10 to 20 times a day. When the battery runs out, instead of charging it, you recycle the entire device and purchase a new ring. It is also water resistant to 1 meter, so it can withstand hand washing and showering, but swimming is not recommended.

In terms of functionality, the app not only lets you create notes, but also allows you to set reminders, alarms, and timers. It's also highly customizable for developers, allowing you to control music playback with the click of a button and send recordings to your own apps using webhooks. The app is compatible with both iOS and Android, and it's also possible to add local features using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

The price of the Index 01 is $75 (approximately 11,300 yen) during the preorder period, and the regular price is expected to be $99 (approximately 14,900 yen). Product shipments will begin worldwide in March 2026. Preorders will be accepted on Pebble's official website from December 10, 2025.
