Microsoft Research announced its AI tool, GigaTIME, in the academic journal Cell. GigaTIME leverages AI models that can process multiple types of data, which Microsoft Research explains has the potential to change the way researchers conduct cancer research. Developed in collaboration with Providence College and the University of Washington, GigaTIME utilizes research-approved data from a diverse cohort of more than 14,000 patients across 51 hospitals and over 1,000 clinics.

While current cancer research relies on expensive and time-consuming experiments to understand how tumors develop in the body, GigaTIME transforms inexpensive pathology specimens into complex, detailed digital maps of how immune cells interact with cancer tumors through protein activation, allowing researchers to discover previously unseen patterns.

Previously, creating this type of digital map would have taken days and cost hundreds of thousands of yen per sample. However, GigaTIME can run simulations for dozens of proteins in just a few seconds. This allows researchers to study tens of thousands of scenarios at once, which could ultimately help identify patients who will benefit from specific treatments and improve their outcomes. It could also help researchers understand why treatments don't work effectively in some patients and how to combat tumor resistance.

GigaTIME is available as an open source research tool from Microsoft Foundry Labs and Hugging Face.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on his X account, 'Today, Cell announced new research showing how AI can accelerate cancer discovery. GigaTIME makes it possible to simulate spatial proteomics from routine pathology slides, enabling population-scale analysis of the tumor microenvironment across dozens of cancers and hundreds of subtypes. Developed in partnership with Providence College and the University of Washington, this research will help scientists move from data to insights more quickly, uncovering new associations between genetic mutations, immune activity, and clinical outcomes, ultimately contributing to improved health for people around the world. ' He is promoting GigaTIME.
