In an effort to develop an AI-first workforce and leverage generative AI to create a more efficient, work-ready enterprise, the Department of Defense is developing its own AI platform, 'GenAI.mil,' which will make available a variety of AI models that will be accessible to civilians, contractors, and military personnel.

The first release of GenAI.mil will be Google Cloud's Gemini for Government. The Department of Defense describes Gemini for Government as 'powering intelligent agent workflows and delivering AI-driven culture change to dominate the digital battlefield,' and states, 'Gemini for Government embodies American AI excellence, putting unparalleled analytical and creative power directly in the hands of the world's most advanced combat forces.'

'In the global race for AI dominance, there is no advantage to second place,' said Under Secretary of Defense Emile Michael. 'We are moving quickly to deploy powerful AI capabilities, like Gemini for Government, directly to our workforce. AI is America's next Manifest Destiny , and we will ensure we dominate this new frontier.'

'We are committed to leveraging AI as a warfighting force. The Department of Defense is leveraging American commercial talent to integrate generative AI into the daily rhythm of warfighting,' said Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. 'AI tools offer endless opportunities to increase efficiencies, and I am excited to see the positive impact AI will have across the Department of Defense in the coming years.'

The Department of Defense offers free GenAI.mil training to all employees, providing the necessary education to build confidence in AI and maximize its potential. All GenAI.mil tools are Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and IL5 certified, ensuring security.

Gemini for Government provides advantages through natural language conversation and search augmentation generation (RAG), and is web-based and Google-compatible, ensuring the reliability of its output and significantly reducing the risk of AI-induced hallucinations.

The Department of Defense said, 'We are ushering in a new era of operational advantage in which every soldier harnesses cutting-edge AI as a force multiplier. The release of GenAI.mil is a strategic imperative essential to our nation's warfighting power and further establishes America as a global leader in AI.'
