Inventor of PyTorch, a key platform for AI development, leaves Meta

Soumith Chintala, the inventor of PyTorch, a machine learning library used in AI development, has announced that he has left Meta and that the PyTorch development project will be handed over to other members.

PyTorch is a machine learning library for Python developed by Facebook (now Meta) and is widely used in AI development. Chintala led the development of PyTorch and served as the project leader until 2025.

Chintara had been with Meta for 11 years, but announced his retirement from Meta on November 6, 2025. 'I have one of the most influential positions in the AI industry. I lead the software layer that leads the entire AI industry. It's really hard to let go of this kind of power, but ultimately, curiosity won out,' Chintara said. 'I could have moved on to other work within Meta, but I wanted to know what I could do in the outside world. I didn't want to have the regret of not trying something outside of Meta.'

'I don't want to be stuck doing the same thing for decades like Guido (the inventor of Python) or Linus (the inventor of Linux),' Chintara said, announcing his retirement from PyTorch development. The PyTorch development team is already training its successors, and there are no issues with the transition, both technically and organizationally. 'Now that I'm no longer imposing my own preferences, the flavor of PyTorch may change a little. However, I'm confident that PyTorch's values will remain unchanged and it will continue to be a great product,' Chintara added.

PyTorch was developed by a research team at Meta, including Chintara, but in 2022 a research and development organization called the 'PyTorch Foundation' was established, and at the time of writing, it is operating under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation.
