YouTube has introduced a new feature that uses AI to upscale uploaded videos below full HD to HD quality, and creators can opt out of upscaling to 4K in the near future.

YouTube is available on a variety of devices, including smartphones and PCs, but the number of YouTube channels earning six figures (tens of millions of yen) from TV views has increased by more than 45% year-over-year. YouTube has announced an update aimed at TV users to address this demand.

* The file size limit for thumbnail images has been increased from 2MB to 50MB.
As part of an update aimed at users who watch videos on large screens like TVs, YouTube has increased the maximum file size for video thumbnails from 2MB to 50MB, allowing creators to set 4K resolution thumbnail images that look great on larger screens.
YouTube also announced that it has begun testing larger file size uploads in collaboration with some creators to allow them to upload original videos in higher quality.
◆ Introduction of new AI function that automatically increases the resolution of videos

YouTube will upscale videos uploaded at resolutions lower than 1080p (Full HD) to 720p (HD) quality. YouTube will also support upscaling up to 4K resolution in the near future.
When a video is upscaled, the original video file and resolution will be kept intact.
You also have the option to opt out of this AI upscaling feature. Here's how to do it:

Open YouTube Studio and click 'Settings' at the bottom left of the screen.

By clicking 'Channel' → 'Advanced Settings,' you can turn 'Allow YouTube to improve video quality' and 'Allow YouTube to improve audio quality' on or off. By default, YouTube's video quality and audio quality improvement processes were enabled.
◆Redesigned to help you find your favorite videos faster

It's not just the quality of individual videos that matters, it's the overall channel experience. Viewers can quickly browse their favorite YouTube channels, discover content, and engage with it with immersive previews on the homepage, and our modern show design lets creators organize videos into collections they'll want to binge-watch in their living room.
◆Improved content search on TV

We're also updating how content is discovered when searching for content on TV. When viewers start their search on a creator's channel page, videos from that channel will be prioritized at the top of search results, rather than being buried under content across YouTube.
◆ Shopping while watching YouTube on TV is now even more convenient
Over the past 12 months, viewers have watched 35 billion hours of shopping-related videos on YouTube, with an increasing amount of viewing time taking place in the living room. YouTube is now tagging shopping videos so viewers can simply scan a shopping QR code to instantly open the product page on their smartphone. To further enhance this experience, YouTube is also testing a feature that will feature products at specific moments within the video.
By eliminating extra steps and capturing viewers' attention at the most appropriate moment, it makes it easier for them to act on inspiration, helping creators drive conversions and grow their brands on the biggest screen in the home.
YouTube CEO Neil Mohan also posted on his X account, 'The number of YouTube channels earning six figures or more from TV revenue has increased 45% year-over-year. We're excited to announce new updates to help creators take advantage of TV, the fastest-growing screen on YouTube. By increasing the thumbnail file size limit (from 2MB to 50MB), you'll be able to upload crisp, high-quality 4K thumbnails that look great on TV. High-resolution videos (with an opt-out option) to highlight your entire back catalog, and adding more surfaces to immersive channel pages will make it easier for viewers to discover and enjoy your content.'
