In an interview with The Verge published on October 22, 2025, GM CEO Mary Barra revealed that the company plans to eventually end support for CarPlay and Android Auto on its vehicles (both gasoline and electric).
Regarding the end of support for CarPlay and Android Auto, GM's Chief Product Officer, Sterling Anderson, said, 'Frankly, this is a very Steve Jobs-style approach. No one liked the elimination of disk drives, and they complained on forums and Facebook. But Jobs said, 'Look, flash storage is the real future. Try it and you'll see.' That's what we at GM are saying.' In other words, GM has adopted the approach of Apple founder Steve Jobs, and as a result, it has ended support for Apple's CarPlay.

It's unclear when support will end, but Barra said the company plans to begin mass deployment of what it calls a 'new centralized computing platform' in 2028. Eventually, all GM vehicles will be equipped with this centralized computing platform, which will likely result in the discontinuation of CarPlay and Android Auto.
Both CarPlay and Android Auto enable smartphone features like maps and music to be accessed through the vehicle's display. GM is working to update its infotainment system to include Google's Gemini-powered AI assistant, as well as various custom apps developed in collaboration with partner companies. The infotainment system is based on Android.
Barra said that while GM is moving forward with the elimination of CarPlay, it has succeeded in building a good relationship with Apple, and revealed that a smart key feature that allows customers to manage their GM vehicle keys using the Apple Wallet app on their iPhone or Apple Watch will be introduced soon.

GM has announced that it will end support for CarPlay and Android Auto in its electric vehicles in 2023.
