'Karil for AI' is an AI assistant that searches library collections nationwide and creates book lists based on themes.

Karil Inc., which operates '

Karil ,' a service that allows users to search for real-time lending status at over 7,400 libraries nationwide, has launched the beta version of ' Karil for AI (Karil Library MCP) ,' a new service that allows users to search the library's collection using AI assistants such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

In a blog post, Carlile pointed out that while the spread of generative AI has dramatically changed people's information-seeking behavior and AI-based coding has become commonplace in the world of programming, the use of AI in the library sector has remained largely stagnant. The integration of library services and AI should create new value in both user experience and library operations, and is expected to boost efficiency, particularly in librarian tasks that require specialized judgment and knowledge.

To address this issue, KARIL launched 'KARIL for AI,' a comprehensive initiative to provide library services accessible through AI, and as a first step, released 'KARIL Library MCP,' a library collection search service.

The Karil Library MCP uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) , an open protocol that connects AI with external systems, and is accessible from major AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. This allows for nationwide service provision without the need for additional implementation in each library's system.

With the Karil Library MCP, you can search for books using natural sentences, such as 'Search for Gurigura at Nakatsugawa City Library.'

It is also possible to have the system select books on a specific theme while searching the library's collection. By entering a sentence such as, 'We would like to organize an exhibition titled 'Preparing for Typhoons' at Tahara City Library. Please select about 10 books for each of several topics, for a total of about 50 books. Please create a book list that is thought-provoking from multiple perspectives,' the system can be used to create a book list that will serve as a starting point for an exhibition plan at the library.

It is also expected to be used by both the library and users, for example, for reference work in response to user inquiries, or for preparing lessons on specific social issues or novelists.

Karil added, 'Because AI answers may contain errors, it is most effective when used by people with the specialized knowledge to properly verify the results. By providing the beta version, we will discover unexpected use cases and issues that need improvement, thereby improving the quality of the service.' They added that having specialized knowledge is important for effective use of 'Karil Library MCP.'

Until now, Karil has provided its service free of charge through affiliate and advertising revenue, but with the spread of AI, the number of users visiting search results pages has decreased, causing a significant decline in the profitability of content-linked advertising. Therefore, with 'Karil for AI,' the company is considering a system that allows people who want to support the service to voluntarily donate, on the premise that all individual users can continue to use the service free of charge.

To use 'CARIL for AI,' you will need a paid plan for ChatGPT or Claude, or GitHub Copilot or Gemini CLI on VSCode. How to connect these AI assistants with CARL and the MCP server endpoint are explained on the following page.
