Windows 11 SE is an operating system optimized for 'low-cost devices' used in educational settings, released by Microsoft in November 2021. Google's Chrome OS has become popular among 'low-cost devices' used in educational settings, but Microsoft released Windows 11 SE to compete with it.

Microsoft quietly announced that it plans to end support for Windows 11 SE in 2026. The company updated its official support page to state, 'Support for Windows 11 SE will end in October 2026.' According to the announcement, Microsoft will no longer release feature updates for Windows 11 SE after version 24H2. Since support for Windows 11 SE (including software updates, technical support, and security fixes) will end in October 2026, the company advises, 'While you can continue to use your device, we recommend migrating to a supported edition of Windows 11 to ensure continued support and security.'

Manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, and Positivo are selling laptops with Windows 11 SE, and Microsoft also released the Surface Laptop SE in 2021. The selling price in Japan started at 30,580 yen.

Microsoft has tried to compete with Chrome OS for years, developing Windows 10's S mode, which limited users to apps from the Windows Store, but the lack of apps in the store frustrated users.

Windows 11 SE takes a similar approach, encouraging the use of Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) instead of traditional Win32 apps, and restricting multitasking capabilities to simplify the user experience for children.
However, Windows Central points out that because Windows 11 SE is internally the same OS as Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro, it has the problem of instability on low-end devices.
Regarding Chromebooks, which run Chrome OS, a competitor to Windows 11 SE, research firm Gartner warned in May 2024 that 'Chromebooks are losing market share due to a small customer base and poor quality.' Chromebooks are also problematic due to their difficulty in repair and outdated software updates.
