4o Image Generation, released on March 26, 2025, can generate highly accurate images by utilizing the knowledge of GPT-4o, and can also improve the quality of the generated images while interacting with AI.

4o Image Generation gained popularity immediately after its release, and on April 4, 2025, OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap reported that 'Since last Tuesday (March 26th), more than 130 million users have generated more than 700 million images.'

On the other hand, a large number of Studio Ghibli-style meme images have been generated using 4o Image Generation, leading to the use of the term 'ghiblifying,' and sparking debate over copyright infringement and ethical issues.

To address this issue, OpenAI is testing adding a watermark to generated images. AI researcher Tibor Vlaho discovered that the beta version of the ChatGPT Android app (version 1.2025.091 2509108) includes a tag called 'image-gen-watermark-for-free.'




Also, since it says 'for-free,' it seems that the watermark will only be available to users of ChatGPT's free plan. Users with a paid plan can save images generated by 4o Image Generation without a watermark by selecting 'Save image without watermark.'




Since this test is still a beta version, it is unclear whether OpenAI will actually introduce watermarks to 4o Image Generation.
