Grok is an AI model that was designed to provide 'slightly witty and cheeky responses' inspired by the sci-fi novel 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.' It has been revealed that it may be trained using data from Musk's social networking site, X (formerly Twitter), and paid X subscribers were given early access to Grok.

Regarding Grok, Musk said on March 11, 2024, 'We're open-sourcing it this week.'

As promised, Grok was open-sourced on March 17th. Grok is open-sourced under the Apache License 2.0, which means you can use it commercially, modify it, and distribute it, but you can't trademark it. You must also include the original license and copyright notice, and clearly indicate any changes you've made.

It has been pointed out that Grok is more powerful than competing models, as it has 314 billion 'parameters,' far surpassing open-source competitors such as Meta's Llama 2 (70 billion) and Mistral 8x7B (46.7 billion).

Meanwhile, OpenAI's 'GPT-4,' which is currently leading the AI race, is said to have over 1 trillion parameters, but this has not been officially released and is not open source. Initially, OpenAI was developing its AI with the goal of 'making AI open,' as its name suggests, but later decided to keep its datasets and training methods private , citing the need to take responsibility for the risks of AI.

In response to this policy change that overturned the company's philosophy, Musk, who made an early investment in OpenAI, pointed out that 'OpenAI has transitioned from a non-profit company to a for-profit company, and has received significant investment from Microsoft, making it like a subsidiary. Important technologies like AI should not be controlled solely by technology giants like Google and Microsoft.' He filed a lawsuit to restore OpenAI, which has become a closed company despite its name.

In response to OpenAI's comment on Grok's open-source announcement, Musk responded sarcastically, saying, 'Tell me more about the 'open' part of OpenAI.'
