AMD's top priority is the development of the Radeon Open Compute platform (ROCm), AMD executives state, and the company will counterattack NVIDIA by adopting the open source programming language Triton

AMD develops and manufactures the Ryzen CPU series and the Radeon GPU series. Regarding its top priorities, AMD stated, ' ROCm , a GPU environment and platform for machine learning, is AMD's highest priority.'

AMD's ROCm has lagged far behind its rival NVIDIA's

CUDA GPU software. Therefore, AMD has made ROCm development a top priority within AMD from 2022, and has established a new organization that incorporates the company's accumulated software development know-how.

'Developing and managing complex software is a journey that takes time,' said Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD's AI division. 'However, AMD has continued to develop ROCm and has finally succeeded in evolving it.'

According to Boppana, AMD CEO Lisa Su also wants to make significant and ongoing investments in software, and as a result, AMD has reportedly launched a group to develop its own AI models to improve the user experience using its proprietary software stack.

AMD is also working to unify its ROCm datacenter GPU platform, Vitis AI AI inference development platform, and ZenDNN AI inference library. 'Integrating these three stacks is no easy task, but at the core of these stacks are common development infrastructure and tools. Therefore, we plan to unify the stacks over time,' Boppana said.

While CUDA, NVIDIA's computing platform, is extremely complex to program, AMD's ROCm uses Triton , an open-source neural network programming language from OpenAI. Developers who want to write high-level code can use Triton, which is not only open source and transparent, but also easier to write than CUDA.

'We're partnering with engineers who develop AI frameworks and AI inference libraries to optimize our source code,' Boppana said. 'The adoption of Triton, an open-source programming language, is important for creating very powerful tools because there are many users who can contribute to improving performance.'

Boppana added, 'We at AMD are still in the growth phase. By making the development of ROCm our top priority, we hope to grow ROCm together with the community and close the gap with NVIDIA.'
