Boeing whistleblower says Boeing 787 should be scrapped

Sam Salehpour, an engineer at Boeing, a major American aircraft manufacturer, and a whistleblower about the company's manufacturing standards, pointed out problems with the safety of the Boeing 787 aircraft in an interview aired on the television program 'NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt,' and said that all Boeing 787 aircraft around the world should be grounded for proper safety checks.

Following the January 2024 accident in which a wall panel fell off on a Boeing 737 MAX 9 , Boeing's internal structure has come under scrutiny for prioritizing delivery dates over safety during the manufacturing process.

Then, on April 9, 2024, Boeing engineer Salehpur held a press conference and made an internal complaint alleging that safety had been neglected in the manufacturing process of the Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft.

According to Salehpour, the fuselage of the Boeing 787 is not properly secured, and it could break after a few thousand flights. Salehpour points out that the problem is due to the way parts are attached and secured on the assembly line. He also said that there is a problem with the manufacturing process of the 777, although he did not specify.

In a January letter to FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker, Salehpour allegedly said he had repeatedly raised serious concerns with Boeing's production and quality-control processes to management and believed those processes were creating potentially catastrophic safety risks.

'I came forward and put myself in the position, but I've come to terms with it because this will save a lot of people's lives,' Salehpour said in an interview.

Boeing has categorically denied Salepour's accusations. A Boeing spokesman said Salepour's claims about the Boeing 787 are inaccurate and do not represent the 'comprehensive work' Boeing does to ensure the safety of its planes.

'We have the utmost confidence in the Boeing 787 aircraft. The issues raised have been subject to rigorous technical testing overseen by the FAA. This analysis has shown that our aircraft, including the Boeing 787, will maintain their useful life,' the spokesman said.

On April 17, 2024, local time, Salehpour and three other aviation experts are scheduled to testify before a Senate investigative committee. The aviation experts are also involved in a February 2024 report that criticized Boeing's 'safety culture as inadequate and disorganized.' The report made 50 recommendations to Boeing and argued that the company should review and develop a plan to address the issue within six months.

Boeing also came under fire in 2019 for its lack of regard for safety , and a former engineer who blew the whistle at the time was reported to have died under suspicious circumstances in March 2024.
